Features of cables used in heavy-duty industries
Let's learn about cables used in heavy industry with Mr. Oliver Schmitz, Global Segment Manager Reeling Cables | Team Manager Custom Cables International from HELUKABEL GmbH.
1. Roles of cables used in heavy-duty industries
When we are talking about heavy-duty industries, it is a collective term for underground mining, steel production industry, open pit mining as well heavy chemical production industries. You can see a lot of applications in this industry such as coal mines, blast furnaces, casting houses and foundries, coal dumps or rolling mills for this industry segment.
Cables in heavy-duty industries have many different features compared to the common ones. These types of cables play a vital role in data and power transmission in any project. In particular, they channel power to devices like excavators, mining vehicles, gravel dredging, conveyor belts and power stations.
2. Properties of cables used in heavy-duty industries
When it comes to the cables used in heavy-duty industries, Mr. Oliver uses 3 adjectives to describe them. First of all, “robust”, because of the harsh conditions and environment. And when it comes to reeling, it must be” flexible” and “durable”.
Regarding the cable sizes, normally the cables used in heavy-duty industries are in bigger sizes than those of the common ones. However, generally speaking, it depends on the applications, ranging from small sizes for control to very big sizes for excavators and power stations, up to 3.240mm2. As Mr Oliver mentioned, the common size is normally 3.150mm2 for underground mining projects.
As for voltage, the range starts from low voltage down to 1KV up to medium voltage cables 3.6/6 - 12/20 kV. To ensure the robustness of cables, we are using special heavy-duty rubber compounds, or PUR - which is also very abrasion-resistant, in some applications.
3. HELUKABEL’s product portfolio for heavy-duty industries
For heavy-duty industries, HELUKABEL supplies a variety of special cables for reeling, festoon and mining systems. Our cables for this segment meet international standards and possess the necessary features to ensure optimal performance in demanding environments.
