In late 2023, Stäubli announced the improved MC4-Evo 2A, replacing the MC4-Evo 2 for all orders placed after December 28, 2023.
While the MC4-Evo 2A retains most of the design and features of its predecessor, it has one notable change: the removal of the two plastic shrouds. This modification streamlines production, simplifies deliveries, and optimizes the installation process, while maintaining compatibility with other MC4 products.
Basically, the technical specifications and properties of the MC4-Evo 2A connector remain unchanged from the MC4-Evo 2 connector.
2. Technical data of MC4-Evo 2A connector
The MC4-Evo 2A connector is a specialized component designed for connecting DC cables together, or between solar panels, or between DC cables and inverters. This product consists of a pair of male and female connectors with compatible designs that securely lock together when connected.
The MC4-Evo 2A connector meets the IEC 62852:2014+A1 Standard, an international standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard outlines the technical and safety requirements for connectors in photovoltaic systems, ensuring safe, efficient, and durable performance under various environmental conditions.
According to the manufacturer's documentation, the MC4-Evo 2A connector system features a 4 mm diameter and a rated voltage of 1500 V for direct current (DC). The rated current varies depending on the cable standard, as follows:
The MC4-Evo 2A cable connector is designed to perform reliably in ambient temperatures ranging from -40°C to +85°C. Its upper limiting temperature is +115°C as specified by the manufacturer.
For the degree of protection, the connector complies with IP65 and IP68 Standards, ensuring it is fully dustproof and resistant to water jets. It can also withstand continuous submersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 1 hour without damage. Additionally, the connector can operate stably at altitudes of up to 5000 meters above sea level.
3. Key considerations for installing MC4-Evo 2A connector
Following the MC4-Evo 2A connector assembly instructions is essential for ensuring safety, as it helps prevent risks like electric arcs, fires, or system failures. The necessary tools for installing the MC4-Evo 2A connector include wire stripping pliers, crimping pliers, cable cutters, assembly and unlocking tools, and a torque set. These tools must meet the manufacturer's specifications to be compatible with the connector.
When connecting the MC4-Evo 2A connector, it's crucial to use Class 5 or Class 6 cables with tinned copper cores. Please note that oxidized or bare copper conductors are not allowed. For safety reasons, Stäubli also prohibits the use of PVC cables as well as non-tinned cables of type H07RN-F.
Though assembling the MC4-Evo 2A connector requires specific technical skills, the process can be summarized in the following basic steps:
- First, strip cable to dimension 6.0 mm to 7.5 mm. After stripping, ensure that individual strands remain intact without deformation.
- Do the crimping and insert the crimped contact into the insulator of the male or female coupler until engaged. Then, tighten cable gland using the appropriate assembly tools mentioned earlier.
- Mate the cable coupler securely.
Additionally, the manufacturer provides several important notes for installing the MC4-Evo 2A connector:
- Always de-energize the photovoltaic system before mating and disconnecting the connectors.
- Never connect male or female part of Stäubli connector with connectors of other manufacturers.
- Mount connector only once and do not modify connectors after assembly.
